Allen Tucker was an American painter who worked in the early 20th century in New York City. He graduated Columbia University’s School of Mines with a degree in architecture before pursuing a painting career. During his lifetime, he was dubbed “America’s Van Gogh” because of the tactile brushstrokes and vibrant color palette found in his (mostly landscape) paintings. Tucker was a founding member of the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, which organized the Armory’s pivotal 1913 show. During his lifetime he also wrote a book on Impressionist painter John Twachtman, taught at the Art Students League, and was the organizing director of the Society of Independent Artists.
