Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg was a Danish academic painter who worked in the early 1800s. Though Eckersberg was a skilled Neoclassical and history painter, having studied under Jacques-Louis David, he made most of his money through portrait commissions and was most passionate about his paintings of ships. Eckersberg is best remembered as a painting instructor at the Royal Danish Academy of Art who laid the foundation for the Danish Golden Age of Painting.
