Wilhelm Bendz was a promising Danish painter in the early 19th century who specialized in genre works and portraiture, but unfortunately died at 28, leaving a disappointingly small oeuvre. He successfully completed a traditional academic education under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. After his training, he became interested in the emerging position of the artist as an intellectual rather than a craftsman; many of his paintings portray artists working in their studios, often complimented by intense lighting and shadow.
