Hendrick ter Brugghen was a leading member of the Dutch group that called themselves Utretcht Caravaggisti, or followers of Caravaggio. Ter Brugghen primarily created genre scenes of religious subject matter. He painted in the chiaroscuro manner, accentuating light with shadow—a practice that Caravaggio was widely known for by that time.
