Samuel Halpert

Samuel Halpert was a Jewish-American painter mostly based in New York City in the early 20th century. While studying academic art in Paris, Halpert became aware of Post-Impressionist artists and abandoned his studies to travel and embrace modern sensibilities. He emulated the styles of the Impressionists and Fauvists before returning to New York to study under Robert Henri alongside Man Ray. His early work mostly consists of congested city-scapes, while his later work depicts flat interiors and nudes. His color pallete is somehow simultaneously dull and vibrant, and his forms are entirely Modern. Halpert was active in numerous American artists’ organizations centered around progressivism. He was married to Edith Gregor Fiviosioovitch who co-founded New York’s Downtown Gallery.
