One of Leonardo da Vinci’s most notable followers, Andrea Solario is best remembered for his religious scenes and three-quarter portraits of young men. Living in the North of Italy in the earlier stages of the Renaissance, Solario was exposed to a variety of techniques and painting styles. He experimented with both the saturated colors of Flemish paintings—the soft, sfumato lines of Northern Italian painting, and the bolder forms and higher contrast of Venetian painting. Solario worked in both Italy and France, living off commissions from private citizens and the church.
