Francois Lemoyne was one of the darlings of the French Rococo period, at the turn of the 17th century. Lemoyne studied many Italian Old Masters, but his work is most clearly informed by Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens, as is evident by his pale, full-figured women and his soft, romantic color palette and brushstrokes. Lemoyne made a comfortable living painting the ceilings of France’s most decadent structures, including Versaille. A perfectionist never satisfied with the quality of his work or achievements, Lemoyne took his own life shortly after his wife’s death.
