Curry was born and raised in rural Kansas, and used the imagery of his upbringing in his artwork throughout his life. An acclaimed American Regionalist painter, he created many of his most celebrated works under the patronage of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, of the Whitney Museum, and the Federal Art Project, which was an initiative during the Great Depression to put artists to work.
