Originally aspiring to be a poet, Yumeji Takehisa began painting without any formal training. Takehisa rejected the term ‘artist’ and therefore was shunned by many of his contemporaries as well as the so-called elite of the art world. Despite this, Takehisa’s work, painted in the Nihonga style, attracted the attention and admiration from the general public.
