Dickinson was born into a working class family in New York City, in 1889. He worked in the Precisionist mode, synthesizing elements from various other movements, such as the jagged compositions of cubism and expressive colors of fauvism. He was one of the first American artists to express an interest in industrial subjects and portray them in a Precisionist style.
