Carl Blechen was a German, Romantic landscape painters in the first half of the 19th century. Without receiving any formal training, Blechen was appointed as a painting professor at Berlin’s Academy of Arts—a rare accomplishment for an academy outsider. Unfortunately, Blechen suffered from frequent bouts of depression and stays in the hospital, ultimately passing away at 42.
