Jules Brenton was a 19th-century French Realist painter greatly inspired by the French countryside. As a realist, Brenton abandoned previously dominant, idealized images of mythological, religious, or high society figures and instead painted bucolic scenes of farmers and other working-class folk. Brenton often subjected working women in his paintings, multiplying the number of images of women who are something other than beautiful object.
