Florine Stettheimer was a New York artist and Jazz-Age salonnière. She studied briefly at the Art Students League in New York, but received most of her significant instruction while traveling Europe. Along with her two sisters, Stettheimer opened a salon “for the contemporary literati, gay, and polyglot New Yorkers and European expatriates.” Her DIY art shows became central to the elite modern art scene, and her innovative style combined Fauvist sensibilities with Gilded Age attitude.
