Gerome was a french artist who began his career as a successful Beaux-Arts painter, creating neo-classical scenes in an academic style. After a trip to Egypt in 1856, his subject matter made a dramatic turn towards scenes of the Middle East and Northern Africa. Gerome was central to the spread of French Orientalism in painting.
