Giovanni Bellini was one of the earliest notable painters of the Venetian School during the beginning of the Italian Renaissance in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. He adapted the thin oil glazing techniques brought from Northern Europe to Southern Italy by Roman and Florentine painters. Bellini combined these sensibilities with his vibrant color applications, which was made possible by his access to a plethora of color pigments through Venice’s trading ports. Along with his colorful paintings of religious scenes, particularly of the Virgin, Bellini is remembered as the painting tutor of two pivotal figures of the Italian Renaissance: Titian and Giorgione.
