Veronese, along with Titian and Tintoretto, is among the “great trio that dominated Venetian painting of the cinquecento”—a period characterized by the revival of arts and culture in Italy from 1500 to 1599. Born Paolo Caliari in Verona (hence his nickname), Veronese moved to Venice to study and practice art. Veronese spent most of his career working for the wealthy patrons of Venice, where his Mannerist style of painting was held in high regard. Among his most important works are his large-scale history paintings of religious and mythological subjects.
