English artist George Stubbs, who is known for his paintings of horses, had a passion for anatomy. Stubbs spent months physically dissecting horses before illustrating and publishing a collection of drawings in his book, The Anatomy of the Horse. As aristocratic patrons saw that his depictions of horses were more accurate than those of his predecessors’, his career took off. Stubbs also painted other animals including zebras, lions, and kangaroos. In fact, Stubbs’ paintings provided the first glimpse to 18th century Britain.
