Rafael Barradas was a Uruguayan modernist painter and graphic artist, who spent the majority of his career living and working in Spain. Barradas was largely self-taught—although he was exposed to Futurist and Cubist movements as a young man studying music in Europe and developed his own style, which he referred to as ‘Vibrationism’. In the 1920s, Barradas was a regular fixture in Madrid’s artistic scene. Alongside his painting, he also worked on theatre design and book illustration.
