Colin Campbell Cooper was an American Impressionist painter remembered and renowned in his lifetime for his city and landscape paintings. While many American Impressionist works are easily mistaken for their French counterparts, Cooper’s detailed, architectural renderings of New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia’s skylines were unmistakably painted in America. As is typical of Impressionist painters, Cooper’s work captured the moment of the turn of the century: its rapid industrialization and the new middle-class city-dwellers. An avid traveler, Cooper painted scenes across American and European cities.
