Frank Weston Benson was an American painter who worked in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After a trip to Europe, Benson adapted an Impressionistic style and was a member of The Ten, a group of east coast artists who sought to reject dominant, academic American painting conventions. Instead they promoted paintings that embrace, rather than hide, the artist’s eye and the work’s material. Like the European Impressionists he admired, Benson painted “en plein air” (outdoors) and focused on depicting light the way he saw it.
