Thomas Wilmer Dewing was an American painter who lived in the mid–19th century, known for his portraits of high society women. He used a limited palette and soft blurry brushstrokes, citing Johannes Vermeer and James Whistler as major influences. He studied in Paris, and went on to teach at the Art Students League in New York later in life.
