József Rippl-Rónai

József Rippl-Rónai was a late 19th and early 20th century Hungarian painter often credited with introducing Modern art to his home country. After training in pharmacology, Rippl-Rónai moved to Switzerland and then Paris to study traditional painting techniques under Mihály Munkácsy, an academic painter also from Hungary. In Paris, Rippl-Rónai met Post-Impressionist artists and adopted a more progressive painting style. When he moved back to Hungary, he was initially met with skepticism, but eventually found success as a portrait painter and designer, even earning stained-glass and furniture commissions. After exhibiting throughout Europe, Rippl-Rónai died in his home in 1927.
