In the early 17th century, William Dobson was one of the first notable English Baroque painters praised by his contemporaries as “the most excellent painter that England has yet bred.” While acclaimed for his portraiture, Dobson also captured the spirits and emotions surrounding the English Civil War, one of the most crucial events in British history. While only about 60 of his works have survived, Dobson is a prideful claim for England, since most canonical painters of the period were Italian or Spanish.
