J.E.H. MacDonald was a Canadian artist and co-founder of the Group of Seven who, in the early 20th century, initiated the first major Canadian national art movement. The Group of Seven was primarily interested in creating work directly inspired by the Canadian landscape. MacDonald was the least abstract painter within the group, resulting in his alienation from his peers.
