Frederic Leighton was an English painter and sculptor whose works depicted historical, biblical, and classical subject matter. Leighton received many national and international awards and honors throughout his artistic career and was well acquainted with members of the Royal family, as well as many great artists, writers, and politicians of the late Victorian era. Throughout his career, Leighton became one of the most famous British artists of the 19th century—remembered for his beautiful canvases filled with luminous colors and solidly drawn figures.
