If the Swedish painter Pehr Hilleström‘s career didn’t converge on a single subject, he at least made a name for himself with his consistent palette and notable restraint. Ever faithful to depicting things as they were, his greatest gift may be to historians; his paintings are a clear window into how the people of his day dressed and decorated. In his later years he pivoted to “historic paintings,” rife with religious references.
