The Swedish portrait painter Alexander Roslin was a world traveler, painting the aristocracy of Sweden, Germany, France, Italy, and Russia. Though his choice of subjects was certainly lucrative—rife with gems, furs, and luxury textiles—he applied a unique sensibility to his work. In his portraits, you’ll find a blend of Classicism, Rococo, and something all his own. These portraits show off the richness of their time while imbuing their subjects’ psychological complexity (such as in The Lady with the Veil_, from 1768.)
