The Austrian-born Australian artist Johann Joseph Eugene von Guérard may be his country’s answer to J.M.W. Turner. Von Guerard’s landscapes can be found in many of Australia’s most heralded institutions. He was schooled at the Düsseldorf Academy and a prime of example of the sort of painting the school espoused: a dedication to fine detail mixed with an affinity for the fantastic.
