The Scottish-born Australian artist Hugh Ramsay found himself at the center of the art world, in Paris, when he was only 23. It seemed the world was colluding in his favor—he excelled at Académie Colarossi and a couple of years later had four works accepted to the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts—but his health took a turn and he had to return to Australia. There he would live out his last years (he died at the age of 30), but he put them to good use. His best works, such as The Sisters (1904), shock the viewer with their verisimilitude.
